Versatile, adaptable, beneficial

At the beginning of the 80’s, the first cellulose insulation became available on the German market under the brand name isofloc. For almost 25 years it has conquered just about every application area: From passive houses to the subsequent thermal insulation of existing buildings and even commercial buildings. Architects and planners appreciate the versatility and speedy installation of the material which can be blown-in, blown-on or sprayed on as a facing layer. isofloc Wärmedämmtechnik GmbH provides extra help in the form of a Planning Handbook available on CD offering constructive solutions for a whole range of problem areas.

This recycled product consisting of de-fibred/shredded newspaper mixed with borate salts is packaged in sacks or delivered to the building site as loose flakes. There it will be installed by specially trained specialist companies. The blow-in technology is provided by a trusted partner of the insulation manufacturer. The specialist installers therefore don’t just have the know-how but also the specialist equipment to deal with any situation and guarantee the highest levels of quality for every installation. When blown in, the cellulose insulation forms a homogenous, wind-tight insulating layer with very good thermal and sound-proofing characteristics, a high thermal storage capacity and the ability to buffer moisture from the surrounding air. The thermal conductivity is around 0.040 W/(mK) with a specific thermal capacity of 2150 J/kgK. Building elements insulated with isofloc provide effective protection against the cold in the winter, comfortably cool temperatures in the summer and an excellent room climate.

Numerous tests have also shown that a cellulose insulation layer in lightweight constructions has an extremely efficient fire retardant effect. This protection is still effective at temperatures of over 1500°C. First of all, the borate salts that are mixed with the insulation release water when heated. This cools the building element and displaces the oxygen. The surface of the insulation then begins to char. This leads to the development of a non-flammable soot layer which severely restricts the development of the fire and in doing so protects other building components. Fire resistance classifications of F30 to F90 are easily achieved.
Building elements insulated with isofloc do not require any maintenance and the flakes can be reused after the building has been demolished (as long as the filled void/compartment remains intact).
According to the manufacturer, due to its good price-performance ratio, isofloc cellulose insulation has nothing to fear from a comparison with competitor products.

The representative Baroque palace Meseberg am Huwenowsee. It is residence for guests of the German Government.
The wheelwright’s building (today the press centre and guest room) and the Castellan house were insulated with isofloc.

Saving CO2

lichtblick.png

We are working and manufacturing without CO2- emission, our energy is coming from water power. Additionally isofloc is from the beginning the insulation with the least amount of imbodied energy.

Variations in the thermal storage

If one considers the commonplace insulation materials within the thermal conductivity group 040, it can be seen that they vary greatly in their thermal storage characteristics and therefore in their effectiveness in shielding against heat in the summertime. The bar chart shown helps to illustrate these differences. It shows how much thermal energy the various insulation materials can store.
